Columbia and Boonville, MO ADAS Calibration Services

Your vehicle’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, known as ADAS, rely on a network of cameras, radar, and sensors placed around the car to power safety features like lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring. When any of those components shift even slightly out of position, the systems they support can’t do their job correctly. GAPS Automotive is the only shop in the Columbia and Boonville area equipped to perform ADAS calibration in house, and local dealerships regularly send their own customers to us for this exact reason. Our technicians are trained on the calibration equipment and manufacturer software needed to recalibrate a wide range of makes and models.

What Is ADAS Calibration?

ADAS calibration is the process of resetting your vehicle’s cameras, radar, and sensors so they’re aimed exactly where the manufacturer intended. These components work together to power features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and parking sensors. Calibration teaches the system where the center of your vehicle sits and how far away objects and lane markings actually are. Without it, these features can misjudge distance or fail to activate when you need them most.

When Your Vehicle Needs Calibration

Several common repairs can shift your ADAS components just enough to throw off their accuracy, even when nothing looks different on the outside. You’ll likely need a calibration after:

  • Windshield replacement, since the forward-facing camera is usually mounted right behind the glass
  • Bumper repair or replacement, since radar and parking sensors are often built into the bumper
  • Wheel alignment or suspension work
  • Collision repair of any kind
  • Replacing a sensor, camera, or radar module directly

If your vehicle has had any of this work done recently and hasn’t been recalibrated, your safety systems may not be functioning the way they should.

Static and Dynamic Calibration

Depending on your vehicle’s make and model, calibration is performed one of two ways. Static calibration uses a set of positioned targets in our shop to recalibrate the cameras and sensors while the vehicle stays still. Dynamic calibration involves driving the vehicle at a set speed so the system can recalibrate itself using the road and lane markings. Many vehicles require both. Our technicians know which method your vehicle needs and have the equipment to perform either one correctly.

Why Skipping Calibration Is a Risk

An uncalibrated ADAS system usually won’t warn you that something is wrong. Your dashboard may show no warning light at all, even though a camera or sensor is off by enough to affect how the system reads the road. That means features like automatic braking or lane departure warning could fail exactly when you need them. The Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC), the ANSI-accredited standards body for the auto glass industry, requires that shops use equipment built specifically for the job whenever a windshield-related ADAS system needs calibration, which is part of why proper equipment matters so much (See the AGSC pdf page 4). Skipping calibration after a repair can also complicate an insurance claim down the road and put manufacturer warranty coverage on ADAS components at risk.

ADAS Calibration FAQ

How long does ADAS calibration take?

Most calibrations take between 30 minutes and a couple of hours, depending on how many systems need to be recalibrated and whether your vehicle requires static calibration, dynamic calibration, or both.

Is ADAS calibration covered by insurance?

If you have comprehensive automotive insurance, you are probably covered for ADAS calibration. When calibration is required as part of a collision repair, it’s usually included in the insurance claim, since manufacturers list it as a required step in the repair procedure. If you’re having calibration done outside of a claim, such as after a routine alignment, it’s typically an out of pocket service. To be on the safe side, check with your insurance first to make sure ADAS calibration is covered.

Why does ADAS calibration cost what it does?

The equipment required for proper calibration, including positioned target systems and manufacturer-specific software, represents a significant investment that most general repair shops haven’t made. That’s a big part of why GAPS Automotive remains the only calibration option in the Columbia and Boonville area.

How often does ADAS need to be calibrated?

ADAS calibration isn’t part of routine maintenance on its own. It’s only needed after a repair or event that could shift your sensors, cameras, or radar out of position, such as the ones listed above.
